I just talked to some people at NuFocus. They believe the design could be
done, but the difficult part will be getting OSHA approval. Using a
retro-reflector (about 1 square inch) and assuming a 500Hz or less rotation,
a detector would cost a few hundred dollars. More revs => more dollars.
The laser is still a seperate issue. Alignment maintainance and reflector
cleaning would be a real pain.

It is a nice idea, but there must be an easier, cheaper and more reliable
method, with less regulatory hassle. I like the idea of a standard weather
vane/wind speed detector and a solar powered radio transmitter or cellular
connection.

FYI, the FAA and the military are testing lasers to detect wind-shear. They
must be working on detecting velocities also.
