A friend of mine has a pager from Call of the Wind. He and his wife
are going to Maui for a couple of weeks, and he is loaning it to me to
try out! It receives pages from 7 bay area locations:
Crissy Field -- windtalker located on the Golden Gate Yacht Club.
Berkley
Candle Stick
Coyote -- windtalker located on the Hertz Rental Car building
on the point.
Waddell -- windtalker located at the lumber yard just south
of Waddell.
Sherman Island -- windtalker located on private residence on levee,
.25 mile west of Powerlines.
San Luis Reservoir
It is a new fangled pager, that has the display on the side instead of
the end, which is much bigger. It receives all seven locations, each
with it's own memory location on the pager. I can then scroll through
each location as they come in. It starts receiving pages for a given
location when the average hits 13, then sent again with every 1 mph
increment in average. Information displayed is:
Location id, wind low, high, average, direction in degrees, temperature.
I used it to sail Waddell Saturday and Coyote Sunday this past
weekend. It is pretty accurate, with Waddell nearly right on, and
Coyote accurate in close, but a little low for the shipping channel.
Did anyone sail Waddell yesterday? It was reporting 18-25 average 21.
It sounded better than Saturday, which was averaging 17.
My first impression is that it gives you an enormous amount of wind
information covering the entire bay area, instaneously! It would take
a lot of phone calls and time to get a similiar profile calling
windtalkers.
For example, as of 8:30am this morning:
San Luis: 17-30 ave 24
Sherman Isl: 8-26 ave 16
Berkley: 10-17 ave 13
If anyone is interested in my impressions after using it for a couple of weeks,
email me and I'll let you know. If I get enough requests, I'll post to
wind_talk.
Standard Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with Call of the Wind, not even
subscribed, just borrowing a friends pager, thought some of you might be
interested in a first hand experience.
